In Hampton, the judge who will decide whether two-sports high school star Allen Iverson spends any time behind bars has refused to meet with two ministers and former Newport News Mayor Jessie Rattley about the case.

The three had hoped to plead for a lenient sentence for Iverson, a football and basketball standout at Bethel High School who was convicted July 12 for his part in a Feb. 14 bowling alley brawl.

The Rev. M.I. Jefferson of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple in Hampton and the Rev. Alfred Terrell of Macedonia Baptist Church in Newport News said they had hoped to join Rattley in a meeting with Circuit Judge Nelson T. Overton before Iverson's sentencing on Aug. 18.

Overton, who will review a court-prepared pre-sentencing report, could suspend some or all of the prison time that Iverson faces.

Iverson, an 18-year-old rising senior, was convicted of three counts of maiming by mob. Each count carries a sentence of five years to 20 years in prison. - Associated Press
