COMMUNITY INVITED TO AID IN STEERING NRV ECONOMY

A series of August community meetings is planned to chart the future of the New River Valley economy.

The meetings are being scheduled by the New River Valley Economic Development Alliance, the New River Valley Planning District Commission and the New River Valley Community Vision 2020 committee.

The first meeting will be Thursday at the Pearisburg Town Hall. All meetings will be from 7 to 9 p.m.

The others will be Aug. 10 at the Floyd County Farm Bureau, Aug. 12 at the Women's Annex on 4th Street in Pulaski, Aug. 17 at the First National Bank in Radford, and Aug. 19 at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Christiansburg.

The meetings will seek initial comments on the strengths and needs of the region and will give participants a chance to help define the region's adjustment strategy.

Once the meetings in each part of the New River Valley are complete, an economic summit will be hosted by the Alliance Sept. 23. A second and third round of community meetings is planned for October and November.

The results of all these efforts will be presented at the third annual New River Valley Community Vision Meeting Dec. 2 at New River Community College.

A number of working groups are being set up to aid the development strategy by focusing on specific components. Further information about them is available by contacting Holly Lesko, regional planner with the New River Valley Planning District Commission, P.O. Box 3726, Radford 24143 (telephone 639-9313).

Lesko will outline the nature and goals of the various working groups for anyone interested in serving on one.

Further information on the first round of community meetings is available by calling the Alliance office (674-3636).
