KRANEFUSS LEAVING FORD MOTORSPORTS

Michael Kranefuss, director of Ford Motor Co.'s motorsports division announced in Dearborn, Mich., that he will retire on Nov. 1. Kranefuss, 55, has been director of special vehicle operations since its inception in late 1980. During that time, the company has been involved in Formula One, Indy-car, NASCAR Winston Cup and World Rally Championship racing.

Rumors in recent weeks have said the German-born Kranefuss would leave Ford to head his own team on either the Indy-car or Winston Cup circuits. Kranefuss didn't address that issue in his announcement, but he did say " . . . there are other things that I would like to do in racing that I can't do in my role at Ford."
