OBIT SIMPSON, COL. GEORGE HERBERT
SIMPSON, Col. George Herbert, 75, of Lexington, died July 29, 1993, in The
Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke. He was born in Norfolk, February 27,
1918, the son of the late George H. and Annie Louise Simpson. In 1940, he
received his B.S. degree from the Virginia Military Institute. During World
War II, he served in North Africa. He served in various positions in the US
Army, from his graduation from VMI until 1963, when he became Commandant of
Cadets. In 1966, he retired from the US Army, after 25 years of active
service, to become VMI's Military Executive Officer. In 1978, he retired from
VMI. He was very active in community affairs, including Treasurer of the SPCA,
a member of the Vestry of R. E. Lee Episcopal Church, where he was head usher.
Surviving are his wife, Adelaide Anderson Simpson; one daughter, Ann S.
Zelenak, Richmond; one son, George H. Simpson III and his wife, Cleary,
Darien, Conn.; four grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted 2
p.m. Sunday at the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery, with a memorial service
following at the R. E. Lee Episcopal Church. The Rev. Dr. Barbara M. Taylor
and the Rector Emeritus D. Holmes Irving officiating. Memorials may be made to
the Handicapped Access Fund at R. E. Lee Episcopal Church or the VMI Class of
1940 Scholarship Fund. Lomax Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
