Several localities have implemented curbside pickup of recyclable materials. Pickup is available in the following localities:
\ ROANOKE: Provides curbside pickup of recyclable materials to 16,000 residents. Program will be expanded to include 100 percent service (38,000 households) by 1995.
Serving 24 city neighborhoods in all quadrants, curbside collection generally is every other week on regular trash collection day.
Eighteen-gallon bins are provided for duplexes and apartments, and 32-gallon roll-out carts to single-family homes.

\ ROANOKE COUNTY: Provides curbside pickup of materials for recycling to 3,800 homes.
Unseparated-materials pickup is provided for the neighborhoods of North Lakes, Willow Creek, Montgomery, Crofton and Lindenwood.
Source-separated materials pickup is provided for the neighborhoods of Castle Rock and Fort Lewis.
A recycling truck is left at Stonehenge, Thursday afternoon to Friday morning for deposit of recyclable materials.

\ BEDFORD: Has a mandatory curbside recycling program for all single family residence. Accepts newspapers, glass, aluminum and bi-metal cans.

\ BOTETOURT COUNTY: Some curbside pickup available through licensed private haulers. Call Kurt Hodgen, public works director, 992-8316.
For residents of areas where curbside recycling is not yet available, various drop-off points are open to receive newspapers, mixed paper, glass, aluminum, mixed metal, plastic and other recyclable items.
Following is a list of several of these locations, with hours of operation and the items they accept:
\ Roanoke Valley
\ ADVANCE AUTO: Seven Roanoke Valley locations. Open seven days a week. Accepts used automotive batteries and motor oil.
\ COMMUNITY RECYCLING STATION: Broadway Southwest, Roanoke (off Interstate 581 at Wonju Street). Open 24 hours. Accepts glass (separated by color), aluminum, scrap metal, newspaper, mixed paper and plastic containers (PETE and HDPE).
\ KROGER: Lake Drive Plaza, Cave Spring Corners, Crossroads Mall. Open 24 hours. Accepts glass, cans, newspaper and plastic containers (PETE and HDPE). Kroger plastic bags may be recycled in bins inside all Kroger stores.
\ SALEM INCINERATOR: 1300 Indiana St. Accepts cardboard, aluminum, glass (separated by color), newspaper, bi-metal cans and plastics (PETE and HDPE).
\ WASTE DIVERTING TECHNOLOGIES: 341 24th St. N.W. Open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m.-3 p.m., Sat. 7 a.m.- Noon. Accepts aluminum, newspaper, glass, mixed paper and plastic (PETE and HDPE).
\ Bedford
\ BEDFORD RECYCLING CENTER: Orange Street and Gold Road. Open seven days a week. Accepts newspapers, glass (separated by color) and beverage cans (aluminum and bi-metal).
\ Bedford County
All of the following Bedford County 24-hour drop-off centers accept newspaper, glass (separated by color), aluminum, bi-metal cans and plastics (PETE and HDPE). Do not accept dark plastics
\ BIG ISLAND: Big Island Fire Department, U.S. 501.
\ CENTERVILLE: Virginia 122 and 644.
\ CHAMBLISSBURG: Virginia 755 at Solid Waste Container.
\ FOREST: Off Virginia 221 at Graves Mill Center and dump site on Virginia 221.
\ MONETA: Moneta Fire Station, Virginia 122.
\ MONTVALE: U.S. 460.
\ SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE: State Park dump site on Virginia 626.

\ Botetourt County
\ BLUE RIDGE STONE: U.S. 460. A container from Cycle Systems is available 24 hours a day, accepting newspapers, aluminum and bi-metal cans.
\ COUNTY LANDFILL: Virginia 779. Open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon. Accepts mixed paper, aluminum, glass, tires and appliances.(PETE and HDPE).
\ SCHOOLS: Breckinridge, Buchanan, Cloverdale, Colonial, Eagle Rock and Troutville elementary schools; James River and Lord Botetourt high schools. Accept mixed paper, aluminum, glass and plastics (PETE and HDPE) 24 hours a day.
\ KAV KAN CORP.: U.S. 11, Cloverdale. Accepts glass, mixed paper, cardboard, aluminum, tin and scrap metal. Open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.-noon.
Craig County
A 24-hour drop-off center for newspaper, mixed paper, aluminum and clear glass is beside the former New Castle High School.
\ Franklin County
Franklin County has 13 24-hour drop-off points for recyclable items throughout the county. For information, call John Crook, Landfield Supervisor, at (703) 489-1600.
Recyclables accepted at these sites include newspapers, cardboard, craft paper, ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal (including all cans), glass food and beverage containers (separated by color), motor oil, large appliances and plastic containers (HDPE and PETE).
The locations are:
\ COUNTY LANDFILL: U.S. 220. In addition to receiving household recyclables, the landfill has machinery available to split tires. Businesses that separate recyclables from other refuse pay a tipping fee only for the non-recyclable items that are dumped.
\ SCHOOLS: Boones Mill, Burnt Chimney, Glade Hill elementary school, Benjamin Franklin Middle School and Franklin County High School.
\ OTHERS: Hardy Road, Virginia 634, Black Water River Wayside, U.S. 220; Snow Creek Fire Department, Virginia 890; and the recreation park on Virginia 619. \ Purchase of recyclables

\ REYNOLDS ALUMINUM: Five locations are available to buy aluminum, copper, brass and car radiators.
