CIVIC GROUPS SERVE ROANOKE VALLEY RESIDENTS

A number of civic groups are active in the Roanoke Valley. A partial list follows. A listing of all organizations is available at the Roanoke Valley Chamber of Commerce.

\ ALTRUIST CLUB: Works with youth and underprivileged children. Presents the annual Debutante Ball. Membership is open to men and women. Meets the first and third Wednesdays of each month, with the exception of June, July, August and December. Contact Dorothy Curtis at 345-0186.

\ CIVITAN CLUB: Supports citizenship and good sportsmanship among students. Helps the mentally and physically handicapped, and sponsors the Roanoke Valley Special Olympics. Open to men and women. Meets the second and fourth Monday of each month at noon at the Holiday Inn on Orange Avenue, near the Roanoke Civic Center. Contact Keen Campbell, president at 344-7765 or at 774-6058.

\ COSMOPOLITAN CLUB OF ROANOKE: Civic organization that raises funds for area charities, and contributes to Roanoke Valley Speech and Hearing Center. Sponsors the annual Cosmopolitan Track Meet at Salem High School for junior and senior high school boys and girls. Meets weekly on Wednesdays, 12:15 p.m., at Belle's at the Holiday Inn on Franklin Road. Contact Roger Simpson 774-3407.

\ JAYCEES: Encourages accepting civic duty and understanding civic problems. Groups promote community well-being through organized effort and leadership training through community service. Open to men and women ages 21 to 39. The Roanoke chapter meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays at the Jefferson Club at 5:30 p.m. The Cave Spring chapter meets on the second and fourth Mondays at Honeywood Clubhouse at 6:30 p.m. The Salem Jaycees meet on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at various locations. \ KIWANIS: Major emphasis is on helping children. A focus is also placed on enhancing the quality of living for elderly adults and aiding handicapped individuals. Clubs award scholarships and support programs for youth.

\ KIWANIS CLUB OF ROANOKE INC.: Weekly meetings, Wednesdays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., are in the Radisson Patrick Henry Hotel ballroom. For more information, call John Shumate, 774-2560.

\ KIWANIS CLUB OF ROANOKE VALLEY: Weekly meetings with dinner and speaker on Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m. at DJ's Brasserie Restaurant on Duke of Gloucester Street. Contact Thomas Hahn at 989-4531.

\ SALEM KIWANIS CLUB: Meets weekly on Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center. Contact Ted Griesenbrock at 387-1470.

\ LIONS CLUB: Serves the blind and Lion Sight Foundation of Virginia Inc. Some groups also have hearing conservation projects. For more information, call Ernest Johnson, at 774-2495.

\ OPTIMIST CLUB OF ROANOKE: Promotes positive thinking. Open to civic-minded people interested in youth programs. Meets the first Thursday of each month 6:30 p.m. at D.J.'s Brasserie Restaurant. For more information contact Larry Osborne, president, at 362-9699.

\ PILOT CLUB INTERNATIONAL: Works with handicapped individuals, provides scholarships and works to improve the quality of life in the community. Meets on the first Monday of each month at 6:15 p.m. at the Holiday Inn on Franklin Road. For more information contact Ruby Morris at 344-9519.

\ ROANOKE VALLEY MOPAR CLUB: Made up of Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler automobile owners. Sponsors annual car show, picnics, car cruises and charity work. Meets the third Tuesday of each month. Contact Louise Scott, 721-3278, after 5:30 p.m. or on weekends.

\ ROTARY CLUBS: Service clubs involved in working with youth leadership projects, education, and support of Polio Plus, which seeks to immunize all children in Third World countries by the year 2005. Clubs are open to men and women proposed by members.

\ NORTH ROANOKE ROTARY CLUB: Meets weekly Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m. at Blueberry Hill Restaurant and Lounge, 5301 Williamson Road N.W. For more information, contact Douglas Bryant at 989-6506.

\ THE ROTARY CLUB OF ROANOKE VALLEY: Meets weekly Tuesdays at 7 a.m. at Hidden Valley Country Club. Open to people proposed by members. Contact Steve Purves at 981-7000.

\ SALEM ROTARY CLUB: Open to people proposed by members. Meets weekly on Thursday at 12:15 p.m. at Salem Civic Center. Contact Roy Henrickson at 387-2940.

\ ROANOKE CIVIL WAR ROUNDTABLE: A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that is interested in the study of the Civil War, and the preservation of Civil War sights. Meets the second Tuesday of each month on the fifth floor of Center in the Square at 7 p.m.

\ RURITAN CLUB: Dedicated to improving communities and building a better America through fellowship, good will and community service. For more information contact Kermit Rockett, district governor, at 703-463-1950.

\ VIRGINIA FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUB: A service organization that works with youth and on civic projects. The Blue Ridge District includes seven junior women's clubs and 18 general clubs, open to all women. For more information, call Sara King at 366-7754.
