MAN PULLED FROM CAVE IN BATH

A Richmond man pulled from a Bath County cave after a dramatic 18-hour rescue operation was listed in satisfactory condition Sunday at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

Brian Devary, 23, fractured his right leg, right shoulder and left ankle about 1:30 p.m. Saturday while exploring Porter's Cave, a privately owned cave in the Millboro Springs section of the county.

More than 130 rescue personnel, including cave rescuers from the Washington, D.C., area and Shenandoah Valley, helped extricate Devary, said Yvonne Henry, with the Hot Springs Rescue Squad.

"It was a fairly difficult extradition," she said. She was unsure just how far Devary had traveled into the cave when the accident occurred. He was in the cave with companions, who called for help.

Henry said such rescues are not uncommon in the county. "There was a similar incident in another cave about 10 miles away about five weeks ago," he said.
