STEELWORKERS OK TENTATIVE CONTRACT

Leaders of a steel workers' union approved a tentative contract agreement with Bethlehem Steel Corp. on Sunday, averting a strike by 10,500 workers in Indiana, New York and Maryland.

The six-year contract will give the United Steelworkers more power and say in how the company is run, said union spokesman Gary Hubbard.

"The union will have a say about the company's board of directors" and be able to influence "big decisions," he said. "It will breathe new life into this company."

A panel of 12 local presidents and four union directors voted 14-2 to accept the tentative agreement, Hubbard said. Final ratification will be by a mail ballot by union members, he said. Details were not disclosed. On average, Bethlehem Steel workers earn $13.69 an hour, a union spokesman said.

On Saturday, Armco Steel Corp. and National Steel Corp. also averted strikes, keeping 8,700 workers on the job in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky. - Associated Press
