NS TRAIN DERAILS IN ROANOKE

A Norfolk Southern Corp. coal train derailed in a Roanoke rail yard early Sunday. None of the five cars overturned and no injuries were reported.

"We estimate that maybe five wheelbarrows of coal spilled out," said Bob Auman, a railroad spokesman.

The train, moving at 15 mph, had 149 loaded coal cars headed for Norfolk. The derailment occurred near the end of the train, Auman said. The company expected to have all five cars back on the track by late Sunday and to repair the track and rail bed today.

Auman estimated damages at close to $60,000. He said the cause is under investigation.

"It has not caused any significant delay to any other trains," and no crossing was blocked, Auman said. The derailment occurred under the Walnut Street bridge, in the company's south yard. Other trains were rerouted. - Staff report
