DAVIS GETTING TO KNOW THOSE JAWBREAKERS

Glenn Davis encountered yet another cruel twist of fate Sunday when he was struck in his already-broken jaw by a foul ball during the Baltimore Orioles' game against the Boston Red Sox at Camden Yards.

Davis, who is on the disabled list, was sitting in the Orioles' dugout when he was hit in the face by a ball off the bat of teammate Jeffrey Hammonds in the fourth inning.

The ball hit Davis in the left jaw below the ear. He was taken to the shock-trauma unit of the University of Maryland Hospital for observation and was discharged early Sunday evening. Several tests, including X-rays and a CAT scan, showed that he was fine, said hospital spokesman Andy Trohanis.

Davis first injured his jaw June 7 in a fight outside a bar in Virginia Beach. He filed a criminal complaint Thursday against the bouncer who allegedly hit him, contending that he was merely coming to the aid of a teammate.

\ RECORD-HOLDER LANGFORD DIES: Elton "Sam" Langford, a former major-league player who still shares the record for most outfield assists in a game, died Saturday in Plainview, Texas, at age 93. Langford was a left-handed hitting outfielder for the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians from 1926 to 1928. He shares the record of four outfield assists with eight players. Langford was the last American Leaguer to accomplish the feat, doing it May 1, 1928.
