BLUE ROCKS TOPPLE BUCS WITH FOUR-RUN FIRST INNING

The Wilmington Blue Rocks rode a four-run first inning to a 7-2 victory over the Salem Buccaneers in Carolina League baseball action Sunday.

Salem took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ramon Espinosa doubled, was sacrificed to third by Don Garvey and scored on a throwing error by Blue Rocks catcher Chad Strickland.

Wilmington responded with four runs in the home half of the first. Mike Guerrero and Hugh Walker reached on errors. A single by Andy Stewart plated Guerrero, and a walk to Steve Hinton loaded the bases.

Raul Gonzalez singled home Walker, Stewart scored on an infield hit by Francisco Mendoza, and Hinton scored on a throwing error by Salem catcher Angelo Encarnacion.

The Blue Rocks added a run in the second inning on a pair of walks, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Walker.

A two-run double by Mendoza in the fifth inning chased Salem starter Dan Jones (4-2).

Salem's other run came on a Joe Ronca's seventh homer of the season.
