SWIMMERS MAKE WAVES IN STATES

Emily Whichard and Laura Webb won races Sunday to lead the Roanoke Valley Gators at the Virginia Age Group Championships in Midlothian.

Whichard won the 100-meter freestyle in the girls' 11- and 12-year-old division with a time of 1 minute, 3.13 seconds, which ranks among the top 16 nationally this year in her age group. Whichard also finished sixth in the 100 butterfly and was part of the fifth-place team in the 200 freestyle relay, joining Emily Mullet, Tracey Pannell and Jamie Spradlin.

Webb also had a top 16 time, winning the 50 backstroke for girls ages 9-10 in 35.59 seconds. She finished second in the 200 butterfly and third in the 100 freestyle.

Other Gators swimmers who placed at the Riverside Wellness Center were: Brett Fonder, second in the 100 freestyle for boys 9-10; Brittany Semones, seventh in the 100 butterfly for girls 9-10; and Tyler Gustafson, third in the 100 butterfly for boys 9-10.

Gators who qualified for the Eastern Zone Championships later this month in Fairfax with their performances in Richmond were: Whichard, Webb, Pannell, Spradlin, Semones, Fonder, Tyler Gustafson and Adam Gustafson.

Tommy Rappold placed in four finals to lead the Carter Center Marlins at the meet. Rappold, competing in the boys' 9-10 age group, finished second in the 50 backstroke, fifth in the 50 breast stroke and seventh in the 50 freestyle and 100 breast stroke.

Other Marlins who placed in finals were: Charlie Davies, second in the 200 breast stroke and third in the 50 breast stroke in the boys' 13-14 age group; Steve Cromer, fifth in the 400 freestyle in the boys' 13-14 age group; Vince Baranaskas, sixth in the 200 butterfly and eighth in the 100 butterfly in the boys' 13-14 division. The quartet of Davies, Cromer, Doug Hartman and Vince Baranaskas placed sixth in the 400 medley relay, seventh in the 200 freestyle relay and eighth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Davies and Rappold qualified for Eastern Zone championships.
