GILES YANKEES OUT-HIT, LOSE IN PLAYOFF OPENER

The Giles County Yankees saw its season come to a close Saturday night with a 18-13 loss to Roanoke North in the opening round of the American Legion Blue-Ridge District playoffs.

The Post 68 team was undone by 20 hits from Roanoke North. The Yankees led 12-7 at one point, but Roanoke North simply hit the ball too well.

"They just kept coming back," said Danny Evans, Yankees head coach. "They just outplayed us and out-hit us. It was a wild ball game."

And despite the use of four pitchers, the Yankees couldn't slow Roanoke North down.

"I tried to slow 'em down with pitching, but the pitching wasn't there," Evans said.

Wayne Caldwell hit a three-run homer for the Yankees, and Ryan Brittle went four for four at the plate. Brittle also was the starting pitcher.

The Yankees ended the regular season at 8-8.

"I was real pleased with the defense and the way the young guys came through this year," Evans said. "We should be tough next year."

Caldwell, Leon Hopkins - who batted in the .500 range this year, - Brittle, Denny Self and Brian Smith are some of the key performers expected to return next season.
