MAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER STEPPING INTO VAN'S PATH

A man living at the Albemarle Home for Adults was in serious condition Monday after being hit by a van as it backed out of the nursing home parking lot, authorities said.

Grover W. Phillips, 68, suffered a collapsed lung, a broken rib and a leg injury and was admitted to Roanoke Memorial Hospital's neuro-trauma unit, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Phillips, a veteran who has lived at the 35-person home for 10 or 11 years, apparently didn't see the van and stepped off the home's porch into its path, said administrator Jim Gross. The home is located on Albemarle Avenue in Southwest Roanoke.

The van, driven by home employee Jesse Russell, was barely moving when the accident happened, Roanoke Police Lt. R.A. Bower said. No charges have been filed; the accident was unavoidable, Bower said.
