BRITAIN FINALLY RATIFIES EUROPEAN UNION TREATY

Britain ratified the Maastricht Treaty on closer European union on Monday, hours after the final legal hurdle to its passage was withdrawn. It was the last member of the 12-nation European Community to do so.
