Carter's 5-over-par 147 total for 36 holes puts him two shots behind 16-17 division leader Mike Miller of Richmond heading into today's final round.
Robby Rasmussen of Chesapeake, who beat Roanoke's Ryan Ketron in the finals of the Bobby Bowers Memorial earlier this summer, is tied for second at 146 with G.W. Cable of Fairfax. Cable shot a 69 Tuesday - the only sub-par round of the tournament.
Carter plays out of Martinsville's Lynwood Country Club. Current Lynwood head pro Wayne Haley won the first VSGA Juniors in 1953.
In the boys' 11-and-under division, Lee Taylor of Roanoke shot an even-par 36 for nine holes Tuesday to grab a share of the lead. Taylor, who finished fifth last year, and Ryan Stinnett of Clifford are tied at 77 going into today's final nine holes.
