RIDERS SADDLE UP IN BATH COUNTY SHOW TODAY

The Bath County National Horse Show, judged Virginia's Horse Show of the Year in 1992, begins five days of competition on The Homestead's horse grounds this morning in Hot Springs.

Approximately 150 horses will be shooting for more than $13,000 in prize money in 103 classes.

The show is particularly strong in the hunter division, said competition manager Ernie Oare of Warrenton.

One of the show's features will be Sunday afternoon's $2,500 Virginia Horse Center Amateur Team Classic, which will feature teams of many of the finest amateur riders in the United States.

Ralph Caristo of Hauppauge, N.Y., and Walter J. Lee, of Keswick, are the event's judges.

Also scheduled for Sunday afternoon's closing performance are the world championship hunter rider awards as well as the Southeast Regional presentations.

\ Floyd's Christina Baum abandoned the Race Across America bicycle marathon Tuesday afternoon after reaching the halfway point in Oklahoma. She suffered from saddle sores and swollen feet during the crossing of the desert Southwest where temperatures exceeding 110 degrees. The injuries, which worsened as she advanced onto the plains, forced Baum to quit after negotiating 1,493 miles on the run from Los Angeles to Savannah, Ga.
