NIXON TRIES TO HALT TAPES RELEASE AGAIN

Former President Nixon has gone to court to stop the National Archives from making the first public release of four hours of White House conversations taped during the summer after the Watergate break-in.

Nixon's lawyers have sought a preliminary injunction to bar the planned release this month of tapes containing segments of 39 conversations recorded in the Nixon White House in July and August 1972.

Nixon wants to delay their release until the Archives transcribes 4,000 hours of White House tapes and returns personal and private material - a process the government says could take years.
