Some 800 employees voted, and 561 voted against collective bargaining. However, a union representative said the union might file an appeal with the National Labor Relations Board.
The union said employees were threatened when hotel owners said a prospective buyer for the bankrupt resort would back out if workers voted for a union. Club Resorts Inc. of Dallas has signed an intent-to-purchase agreement with The Homestead owners.
A worker who attended the rally near the employee parking lot said no one made a speech, but some people carried signs, including one that said: "We voted. We decided. We want Club Resorts."
"We don't want anything done to oppose the election," said the worker, who didn't want to be identified. "We say no. It was voted no and that's how we want it to stand."
Union officials could not be reached for comment. - Staff report
