POST 3 NORTH ADVANCES TO STATE

Kevin Saunders belted a grand slam and C.D. Polumbo drove in the winning run Tuesday night as Post 3 North won an American Legion playoff game 10-9 over Danville Post 325 at Salem Municipal Field.

Post 3 North advanced to the state tournament beginning Aug. 11 in Colonial Heights.

Danville led 4-1 entering the fifth inning, but Donnie Meador tied the score with a three-run single.

Saunders launched his grand slam in the top of the seventh to give Post 3 North an 8-4 lead, but Danville scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead 9-8.

In the top of the eighth, Saunders had a run-producing single and Polumbo provided the game-winning hit. Meador came on in relief to pitch the final two innings, retiring Danville in order.

Saunders went 3-for-5 with five RBI and Meador was 3-for-5 with four RBI.
