ROANOKE STARS OUSTED IN AAU BASKETBALL

The Roanoke Stars lost twice Tuesday at the AAU 13-under national girls' basketball tournament in Maryville, Tenn.

The Stars lost 68-57 to the Connecticut Starters and fell 71-65 to the Detroit Cougars.

Roanoke's game with Connecticut was delayed for two hours, 15 minutes at halftime because of a bomb threat and the building was evacuated again with 32 seconds left in the game because of a fire in a hallway.

Lisa Bryan had 13 points and Kristin Smith added 10 in the loss to Connecticut.

Against Detroit, Bryan, a 6-foot-4 center, had 18 points. Smith also had 18, including 10 of 12 free throws, and Sara Moore added 12 points. The Stars lost despite shooting 22-for-39 from the floor.

The Stars were eliminated from the tournament with an overall record of 3-3.

The Bath County National Horse Show, judged Virginia's Horse Show of the Year in 1992, begins five days of competition on The Homestead's horse grounds this morning in Hot Springs.

Approximately 150 horses will be shooting for more than $13,000 in prize money in 103 classes.

Floyd's Christina Baum abandoned the Race Across America bicycle marathon Tuesday afternoon after reaching the halfway point in Oklahoma. She suffered from saddle sores and swollen feet during the crossing of the desert Southwest where temperatures exceeding 110 degrees. The injuries, which worsened as she advanced onto the plains, forced Baum to quit after negotiating 1,493 miles on the run from Los Angeles to Savannah, Ga.
