RAISING KIDS - `30S STYLE

IN RESPONSE TO the July 17 editorial, Spare the rod in public schools: That is what is wrong. If the rod were used more, there would not be so many kids carrying guns to school today - but lots of parents are afraid of their kids.

I say go back to corrections of the old days.

In the 1950s, the principal called me about my oldest son - the first and last time. My youngest son had one "march" in 1960; that was the last time.

They got corrected like I did. That was the 1930s style. In later life, I loved my parents for it. MARIE FOLEY CATAWBA
