YPSILANTI, Mich. - General Motors Corp. has the right close its Willow Run assembly plant and lay off 4,500 workers, a state appellate court ruled Wednesday
The Michigan Court of Appeals said GM's acceptance of $13.5 million in local tax abatements doesn't mean the automaker promised to keep the plant open indefinitely.
Ypsilanti Township officials, who sought to force GM to keep the plant running, said after the ruling they expected all along to take the case to the Michigan Supreme Court.
GM said in February 1992 it was closing the plant and shifting production of large rear-wheel-drive cars to Arlington, Texas.
Ypsilanti Township, which granted it property tax abatements in 1984 and 1988, sued in April 1992. - Associated Press
