HUSSEIN DISSOLVES JORDAN'S PARLIAMENT

King Hussein dissolved Parliament on Wednesday and scheduled Jordan's first multiparty legislative elections in 37 years.

State-run Radio Jordan said the king issued a royal decree dissolving the 80-member lower house of Parliament, elected in November 1989.

The new elections were scheduled for Nov. 8. The announcement ended months of speculation as Hussein found himself facing a bloc of Muslim fundamentalists challenging the government's policies. Fundamentalists captured 22 seats in the 1989 vote.
