OBIT VEST, ELISE THOMPSON
VEST, Elise Thompson, of Charlottesville, died Tuesday, August 3, 1993, in
a local nursing home. Born July 30, 1906, in Graham, N.C., she was the
daughter of the late Charles Aubrey Thompson and Mary Ovella Wood Thompson.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Samuel Alexander Vest Jr.,
who was the former chairman of the Department of Urology at the University of
Virginia Hospital; a son, Samuel Alexander Vest III, and a daughter, Sarah
Agnes Vest Izard, the wife of W. Bolling Izard of Roanoke. Mrs. Vest graduated
from Greensboro Woman's College and studied piano at New England Conservatory
of Music in Boston, Mass. She was a former member of the Farmington Country
Club and Farmington Hunt Club and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church,
Ivy. Survivors include a daughter, Catherine V. Duffey of Charlottesville; a
son, Charles T. Vest of Charlottesville; a sister, Catherine Thompson Sugg of
Roanoke; eleven grandchildren, Sarah Izard West of Charleston, S.C., W.
Bolling Izard Jr. of Boyce, Margaret Izard Valentine of Richmond, James
Johnston Izard II of Norfolk, Frances Duffey Wickline of Kennesaw, Ga.,
Catherine Duffey Cates, Parks Pegram Duffey III, both of Richmond, Augusta
Wharton Duffey of Boston, Mass., Elise Wood Duffey and Phebe Alexandra Vest,
both of New York City, and Sarah Tarpley Vest of Charlottesville. Private
funeral services will be conducted by her cousin, the Rev. Elizabeth Thompson
Severance of Durham, N.C. Contributions in memory of Elise Vest may be made to
the Department of Urology at the University of Virginia Medical Center, P.O.
Box 422, Vest Memorial Lecture, Charlottesville, Va. 22908. Hill and Wood
Funeral Home, Charlottesville, is in charge of arrangements.
