OBIT EASTMAN, ANN HEIDBREDER

EASTMAN, Ann Heidbreder, 59, of Green Valley, Ariz., died of cancer Tuesday, August 3, 1993 at Munson Medical Center. Mrs. Eastman was the daughter of the late H. Willis and Margaret Hislop Heidbreder of Traverse City, Mich. Mrs. Eastman and her husband, Arthur M. Eastman were vacationing in Traverse City at the time of her death. She was a nationally knownspecialist and consultant in book publishing, literacy and libraries. After graduating with honors in English from the University of Michigan, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, she worked in New York City for book publishers and for the Association of American Publishers. She also was active in many book and library organizations and was the author of articles and books on books and libraries. In 1977, President Gerald R. Ford appointed her to the National Advisory Committee of the White House Conference on Library and Information Services. The conference took place in 1979. From 1980-1985, she was the coordinator for "Books Make A Difference", a project sponsored by the Center for the Book, Library of Congress. She held many offices in the Library Administration and Management Association of the American Library Association and was its president from 1987-1988. In 1986, she received the Women's National Book Association Award, given annually to " an American bookwoman for a career characterized by extraordinary contribution to books and through books, to society." She is also survived by her brother, William H. Heidbreder of St. Louis, Mo.; two nieces and a nephew. Services will be held Saturday, August 7, 1993 at 11 a.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City, Mich. Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Dr. Homer Nye will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Medical Center, Sixth & Madison, Traverse City, MI 49684.
