OBIT GRANT, FRED W.
GRANT, Fred W., 68, Norcross, Ga., died Tuesday, August 3, 1993, at St.
Joseph's Hospital, Atlanta, Ga., after a brief illness. He was a design
engineer and food facilities consultant who was born and raised in
Christiansburg. He was a fullback on the University of Alabama team that won
the Rose Bowl in 1946, led two major college conferences in scoring. He was a
freshman at Wake Forest in 1943, and led the Southern Conference scorers and,
after transferring to Alabama, captured the SEC scoring title in 1945 with 66
points. Mr. Grant attended Christiansburg High School where he was a standout
athlete. His parents, the late Fred and Zenith Grant, were proprietors of
Grant's Tavern in Christiansburg. Mr. Grant is survived by his wife, Bernice
Cowling Grant of Norcross, Ga.; a son, Frederick Grant III of Spartanburg,
S.C.; two daughters, Kelly Grant, Columbia, S.C.; Debbie Bernstein of
Alexandria, Va.; two stepsons, Clifford C. Cowling and Michael W. Cowling,
both of Richmond, Va.; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be 11 a.m.
Saturday from the Richardson-Horne Funeral Home Chapel in Christiansburg with
burial in Sunset Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home
from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Arrangements are being handled by Richardson-Horne.
