Association seeking tree festival entries

The Mental Health Association of Roanoke Valley is accepting applications for its 11th annual Festival of Trees.

The festival will be held on the 21st floor of the Dominion Tower from Nov. 26 through Dec. 24. For more information about entering the festival, contact the Mental Health Association at 344-0931.

Nominations for Clean Valley awards sought

The Clean Valley Council is accepting nominations for its cleanup, education recycling and government awards.

The council annually recognizes responsible or innovative litter prevention, reycling and disposal projects. Nominations of individuals or groups should be sent to: CVC, P.O. Box 3320; Roanoke, 24015. Projects that took place between Sept. 1, 1992 and Aug. 31, 1993 are eligible. All entries should be post-marked by Sept. 30, 1993. The council also has elected its 1993-94 officers. Allan C. Robinson Jr. is president.

Other officers elected are: Ed Callis, vice president; Nancy Bailey, secretary. Newly elected directors are: Owen M. Grogan, Kurt Hodgen and Kelli Updike.

County needs volunteers to provide transportation

The Roanoke County Social Services Department, which also serves Salem, needs volunteers to help with transporting elderly and disabled citizens to the doctor, the grocery store and other destinations.

The department will train volunteers, who are asked to give four hours per week for three months. For more information on becoming a volunteer, contact the department at 387-6087.

Group plans annual sale, seeks donations

The American Association of University Women is accepting books, records, videos and puzzles for its annual book sale on Sept. 11-12.

People who want to donate materials or need to have them picked up should contact Jo Eggers at 254-2202 or 366-9262. Materials also can be dropped off at 618 Woods Ave. on the side porch. Proceeds from the sale are used for a scholarship fund.

League seeks senior companions and fans

The League of Older Americans is seeking volunteers for its new Senior Companion Program.

Senior companions serve 20 hours per week in the homes of other senior citizens helping with personal care, preparing meals, home management and relieving families of some daily care. The program is offered in Covington and Clifton Forge, and Alleghany, Botetourt and Craig counties.

Senior companions must be over age 60 and have a limited income. Volunteers receive a non-taxable hourly stipend, an annual physical, assistance with transportation costs, meals or reimbursement for meals while volunteering, liability and accident insurance while volunteering. The league also is asking for donations of new or used fans for distribution to the elderly. Bring donations to LOA's office at 706 Campbell Ave., Roanoke. For more information, call 345-0451.

Club sells Christmas tree globes for fund-raiser

The Kiwanis Club of Roanoke Valley will distribute ornamental Christmas tree globes as part of its Cultural Awareness Program for 1993.

This will be the second year of a 10-year program the club is using as a fund-raiser.

The 1993 globe pictures Jefferson High School. A small number of last year's globes, depicting the Hotel Roanoke, are still available. For more information, call (703) 774-2965.

Literacy group plans training for volunteers

Literacy Volunteers of America Roanoke Valley will hold training for adults who are interested in tutoring conversational English to adults for whom English is a second language.

The training will be on Aug. 23, 25, 27 and 30 at the organization's Roanoke Valley office, 2728 Colonial Avenue S.W., Suite 114, from 6:30 until 9 p.m.

Volunteer tutors must attend all sessions. Training will be limited to 10 participants.
