REDSKINS' ERVINS SIGNS 1-YEAR DEAL

Third-year running back Ricky Ervins, the only holdout this summer for the Washington Redskins, reported to practice Thursday after agreeing to a one-year contract.

"I'm satisfied; everything worked out," Ervins said after meeting with Redskins general manager Charlie Casserly and coach Richie Petitbon. "It's a business and these things happen. I feel good now. I just hope it stays like this."

Ervins had sought a salary of $2.5 million after making $215,000 plus incentives in 1992. He reduced his demand to $600,000 last week, but the Redskins would not budge above $450,000.

Including incentives, Ervins said they came together "somewhere in the middle." But neither he nor Casserly would discuss specifics of the contract other than to say it was a one-year deal.

The Redskins have been looking to use Ervins as a fifth receiver on third downs in a new two-back offense they plan to use occasionally.

"I just want to work in and feel comfortable with the plays," Ervins said. "Hopefully, I can be one of those backs."

Petitbon said Ervins still figures prominently in Washington's plans.

"We need him," the coach said. "We wish he had been here earlier, but I don't think we lost anything."

\ INJURY REPORT: Linebacker Carl Banks has a mildly strained hamstring and may miss Monday night's exhibition game with Cleveland. Definitely out are top draft pick Tom Carter (back), receiver Stephen Hobbs (strained abdominal muscle) and center Matt Elliott (knee).

\ SHORT STUFF: Virginia coach George Welsh and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tom O'Brien watched the morning practice. . . . Brian Mitchell will return "one or two" punts Monday night against Cleveland. Ex-VMI players Mark Stock and free-agent rookie Gregory Clifton will also get shots, if possible. William and Mary alumnus Robert Green and Notre Dame rookie Reggie Brooks will handle kickoff returns.
