TRACK OWNER CHARGED IN RAID

Franklin County Speedway owner Whitey Taylor was charged Thursday with operating a public nuisance, five days after authorities arrested 56 racing fans at Taylor's track on drinking and drug charges.

Wallace Vann, a special agent with the state Alcoholic Beverage Control agency, said authorities plan to arrest Taylor on that misdemeanor charge within a couple of days.

The arrests Saturday came after several racing fans complained to Franklin County Sheriff W.Q. Overton that drunken patrons at the track were ruining everyone else's fun.

Taylor claims Overton is picking on him.

If convicted, Taylor could face a $2,500 fine and up to one year in jail. He could not be reached for comment at his home Thursday night.
