MARSHALL STRIKES IT RICH

A Huntington, W.Va., philanthropist has given $2 million to the Marshall University football program. It is the largest single donation the Southern Conference school has ever received, President J. Wade Gilley said.

The playing field at Marshall University Stadium will be renamed James F. Edwards Field.

Half of Edwards' donation will be used to pay off part of the bonds sold to build the stadium, and the other half will be set aside for football scholarships and other projects, Gilley said.

\ Seana Hogan of San Jose, Calif., remained the leader in the 12th annual Race Across America, having bicycled 2,437 miles since the women's portion of the competition began July 28.

In second place among the women was Muffy Ritz of Ketchum, Idaho, a rookie who was three hours behind Hogan late Thursday. Both riders were in East Tennessee on their way to Savannah, Ga. The other two women who started the race - Debbie Breaud of Burleson, Texas, and Cristina Baum of Floyd, Va., - have dropped out. Breaud stopped Thursday and Baum on Tuesday.
