Two Republicans on Capitol Hill struck the ultimate deal on the House floor: They agreed to get married.

Reps. Bill Paxon and Susan Molinari, two New York Republicans, announced their engagement Thursday, a day after Paxon, on bended knee, popped the question in the back of the House chamber. Molinari, who landed a 2-carat-plus diamond out of the deal, said yes.

The razzing was relentless.

"The Bible says be fruitful and multiply," teased Rep. Eliot Engel, D-N.Y. "I wish them in the future many, many healthy happy children. And may they all grow up to be good Democrats."

Paxon, 39, was elected to the House in 1988; Molinari, 35, came to Congress in 1990. They have been dating for about two years. No wedding date has been set.

There's no word yet on where the couple will live when back home in New York. Paxon represents a district near Buffalo, while Molinari represents Staten Island, at the opposite end of the state.

Ain't no drag, Papa's got a brand new bridge.

So if you want to cross the new bridge in Steamboat Springs, Colo., you'd better get on the good foot, because after seven months of wrangling, the town has named it the James Brown Soul Center of the Universe Bridge.

And how does the Godfather of Soul, the Hardest Working Man in Show Business, Mr. James Brown feel about all this:

"It's one of the things that makes me feel good." You knew that it would, now.
