OBIT-HERRING, GEORGE WILLIAMS EFFINGER
HERRING, George Williams Effinger, 79, of Natural Bridge, died Tuesday,
August 3, 1993, at University of Virginia Hospital. He was born at Fruit Hill
in Rockbridge Co., June 29, 1914, he was the son of the late Jonathan Shafer
Alexander Herring and Lucy Madison Effinger Herring. Mr. Herring was a cattle
farmer for many years and was a member of Falling Spring Presbyterian Church.
He was a graduate of Shenandoah Valley Academy of Winchester; and a graduate
of Virginia Military Institute Class of 1938. He was a retired Army Officer
having served in World War II; a member of the Natural Bridge Ruritan Club; a
member of the American Legion; and of the Rockbridge Chapter of the V.M.I.
Alumni Association, and Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He was a past member and
secretary of the Rockbridge Farmers Co-op Board of Directors for 35 years. He
was a past member of the following: A.S.C.S. board of Directors, Board of
Directors for the Crestar Bank, Rockbridge Co. School Board, Stonewall Jackson
Hospital Board of Directors, Rockbridge Historical Society, and Rockbridge Co.
Welfare Board (Social Services). He is survived by his wife, Ruth Anne Agnor
Herring, Natural Bridge; daughter, Anne Elizabeth Effinger Herring Huffman,
Lexington; two stepsons, Charles Bell Upshaw III, Raleigh, N.C., Agnor LeRoy
Upshaw, Buies Creek, N.C.; one stepgrandson, Charles Andrew Upshaw, Raleigh,
N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, August 7, 1993, 2 p.m. from
the Falling Spring Presbyterian Church with Dr. Frederick F. Ritsch III
officiating, with burial to follow in the Church Cemetery. The family suggests
memorial contributions be made to Falling Spring Presbyterian Church, the
American Cancer Society or the Rockbridge Grant Program of the V.M.I.
Foundation. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the
Harrison Funeral Home, Lexington.
