\ PEACHY WEDNESDAY: All roads meet at the Virginia Peach Festival. At least that's what the Patrick County Chamber of Commerce likes to say. They're presenting this year's festival Wednesday at J.P. Via's Peach Orchard - just follow the smell of peach cobbler to Virginia 697 off U.S. 58, 12 miles east of Stuart. The Entertainers, Foddrells and the Cross Creek Blue Grass Band will kick in the tunes while you munch on barbecued pork, baked beans, cole slaw, rolls. And, oh yeah, peaches.

\ OEDIPUS REVISITED: The classic gets updated treatment in this new-play workshop at Lime Kiln Theater in Lexington. Bill Goulet penned this interpretation set in the Virginia mountains among the Melungeon people. Original songs and music by Marshal B. McAden accompany the action. When the lights go up at play's end, hold your seats for a moment longer and tell the play's writers, designers and cast what you thought of the production.

\ LONG TIME FIDDLES: For the 58th year, the Old Fiddlers' Convention in Galax gets under way Wednesday through Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. and at noon on Aug. 14. Come to Felts Park to check out the one of the biggest bluegrass and old-time festivals around. This year folks will compete for $12,500 in cash prizes on the fiddle, autoharp, guitar, mandolin, banjo, dulcimer and dobro, and in folk song, flatfoot dance, band, and best all around performer.
$5 gets you in Wednesday and Thursday, $6 on Aug. 13-14. Or, for 20 bucks, you can take in all four nights. For information, call 236-8541.
\ COMING HOME: In the heart of the central Appalachian coalfields, Jewell Ridge sprang to life as a mining town in the early 1900s. This weekend, the town celebrates its homecoming by inviting folks to come back, or come for a visit. Opening ceremonies are tonight at 6 p.m. Throughout the weekend, tours of the Jewell Ridge Company Store and Early Smith's Coal Miners Museum will complement the oral history interviews, absolute auction, wilderness run, arts and crafts show, music and lots of dancing.

\ STARRING RANEY: Clyde Edgerton's ``Raney'' is a novel chronicling the first two years of marriage of small-town, Baptist-raised Raney Bell Shepherd and her liberal husband, Charles from Atlanta. The play version will take center stage when the Southern Appalachian Repertory Theatre of Mars Hill, N.C., performs tonight-Sunday. Adapted by North Carolina playwright John B. Justice, ``Raney'' will be performed in Owen Theatre on the Mars Hill College campus.

\ SELLING BABE RUTH: Buy, sell or just look during the eighth annual Baseball Card Show and Sale.
