VA WANTS TO EXTEND AID TO HOMELESS VETS

The Department of Veterans Affairs hopes to locate and help more homeless veterans and open its hospital system to all veterans, secretary Jesse Brown said Friday.

The VA hopes to spend an additional $10 million next year to locate homeless veterans and try to get them into the health-care and benefits system, Brown said.

Brown addressed the participants at the sixth national Vietnam Veterans of America convention.

Although the VA's role in President Clinton's national health-care reform has yet to be fully defined, Brown said it may open VA hospitals to all veterans, instead of just primarily to those with service-related disabilities or who are poor.
