EX-VINTON COUNCILMAN JACK SHELTON DIES

Jack Lee Shelton, former member of the Vinton Town Council and retired lieutenant colonel in the Air Force, died Saturday at a local hospital. He was 63.

Shelton was a hospital administrator in the Air Force for 19 years before becoming administrator of Gill Memorial Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital in 1973.

He was elected to the Vinton Town Council in 1980 and served until 1988. While on council, Shelton was known for his attention to financial details.

He widely criticized fellow council members who voted pay raises for themselves that exceeded the rate of inflation.

After retiring from Gill Memorial, Shelton operated a part-time tax preparation business from his home.
