MCGUIRE TAKES WIN AT FCS

Tony McGuire made two mistakes Saturday night, but fortunately for him neither one counted.

McGuire won the 100-lap Late Model Stock feature race of the Leo Scott Cabinets 300 at Franklin County Speedway. The victory was his fourth of the year and moved him into sixth place in the points standings.

McGuire qualified on the pole and led from green flag to checkered flag. But he jumped the start twice and was warned that if it happened again he would be moved to the back of the field. The third time he was clean.

McGuire qualified in 14.17 seconds (a little more than 95 mph) and opened a substantial lead over Dicky Wilson midway through the race. After Wilson faltered, however, Carl Dadian moved into second and nearly caught McGuire in the final laps.

"We finally got our car running well Thursday night," McGuire said, "and I think we showed what it could do in qualifying. But we were running terribly slow at the end. We were fortunate to win."

McGuire's average time for the final 50 laps was 14.60 seconds. "You need to be running [14.] 30s and 40s to win races," McGuire said.

Harvey Harrison, the winner on July 31, was third, and Wilson, the track champion last year but winless this season, finished fourth.

In other races:

In the Mini Stock opener, pole-sitter John Hall outran points leader Steve Lynch and tightened the points race. Lynch finished second and Tommy Dean, who also is within striking distance for the season championship, was third.

Collinsville's Jimmy Mullins won his fourth consecutive Street Stock race and saved the track a $100 bounty set on him. Mullins qualified two-hundredths of a second ahead of 10-time winner Phillip VanDerVeer, who was eliminated from the race in a multicar collision on lap 21.

Lonnie Foley, second in points, escaped the incident and placed second. Dale Marlowe finished third for the second week in a row.

Modified points leader Buster Carroll prevailed over Rodney Cook (second) and Kenny Wagner (third) in their 50-lap race. Kenny Minter, who ran with the Modifieds, was declared the Super Modified winner.
