`LEE'S RETREAT' PRESSES ON

Six Southside Virginia counties are hoping Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's retreat in 1865 will fuel enough interest for them to develop a 20-stop tour that would bring Civil War aficionados to the region.

The six counties have applied for a $780,000 federal grant to help pay for the project. If the grant is approved, each county has agreed to pay $7,600 for each site within its boundaries.

The six counties in the project - Amelia, Appomattox, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Nottoway and Prince Edward - have been told that a decision on their grant request will be made by November.

The proposal calls for two routes that would cover stops from Sutherland Station in Dinwiddie to Appomattox Court House, where Lee surrendered to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865. The routes would follow the path of Lee's Confederate troops before the surrender.

On each of the two routes, there would be signs at each stop instructing motorists to tune their radios to the 1610 AM radio frequency. A solar-powered transmitter installed at stops would provide recorded messages about troop activities.
