May Department Stores Co., St. Louis-based parent of the Hecht's chain and Payless ShoeSource stores, on Monday reported second-quarter net earnings of $117 million, or 44 cents per share, up 22 percent from $95 million, or 36 cents, in the 1992 quarter. Sales were $2.5 billion, up 8 percent from $2.31 billion.
For the six months, net earnings were $213 million, or 79 cents per share, up 20 percent from $176 million, or 66 cents in the 1992 half. Sales totaled $4.82 billion, up 7 percent from $4.51 billion.
May Department Stores Co. operates 302 department stores and 3,650 Payless ShoeSource stores.
