VENEZUELAN STORM DEATHS REACH 150

Survivors joined firefighters Monday in searching through rubble for victims of Tropical Storm Bret, which killed 150 people and injured at least 500.

Many of the victims were children, said Enrique Aponte, director of the central morgue.

Mudslides touched off by the storm's torrential rains Sunday also left 11,000 homeless. It was Venezuela's worst natural disaster since an earthquake killed 245 people in July 1967.

Bret had been expected to pass by Venezuela without doing much harm. But it struck hard early Sunday, leaving 5 inches of rain in seven hours - a record this century in Venezuela. - Associated Press
