ODAC WOMEN MAY GET AUTOMATIC BID

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference is one of seven conferences that may receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III women's basketball tournament for the first time next year.

The request for automatic bids is being reviewed by the the NCAA Executive Committee, which will rule on the issue.

North Roanoke American dropped a 9-5 decision to Texas on Monday, finishing seventh at the Dixie Girls Softball National Tournament in Zephyrhills, Fla.

North Roanoke, which was 1-2 in the Ponytail Division of the double-elimination tournament, took a 4-0 lead in the first inning but couldn't hold it.

Kristina McMillian and Amber Meyers each had two hits and drove in a run for North Roanoke.

The kickoff for the Lynchburg Jaguars' opener Saturday has been moved up from 7 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Mason-Dixon Football League team will face the Tidewater Sharks at Liberty University.

The Big South Conference men's basketball all-star team dropped two games on its tour of Russia during the weekend. The Samara East Bay team defeated the Big South 96-81 in the second game of the six-contest tour Saturday, and Kiev topped the all-stars 97-93 on Sunday.
