HEBRON MAKING MARK WITH EAGLES

Vaughn Hebron was disappointed he wasn't picked in the NFL draft this year.

In his first two outings with the Philadelphia Eagles, the rookie free agent out of Virginia Tech has shown why he deserved consideration.

Hebron capped a nine-play drive with a 1-yard run in the third quarter, leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a 13-9 preseason victory Sunday night over the Chicago Bears. A week earlier, he led the Eagles in rushing with 34 yards on five carries in their first preseason game.

"Hebron kept all of our eyes open," Eagles coach Rich Kotite said. "He's got the poise of a veteran."

Hebron said he wasn't ready to be compared to veterans yet. "Being a free-agent rookie, you know that very few mistakes can come your way," he said. "Every day is a learning experience."

The Eagles are 1-1, after losing 28-16 to the New Orleans Saints in Tokyo on July 31. Chicago was playing its preseason opener.

The drive that led to Hebron's touchdown began when Eagles linebacker Ken Rose recovered a fumble by Chicago wide receiver Curtis Conway at the 50-yard line.

Backup quarterback Bubby Brister drove Philadelphia to the Bears' 11, highlighted by a 10-yard pass to free-agent wide receiver Tom Garlick and a 16-yard pass to tight end Joey Mickey.

Hebron ran for gains of 6 and 4 yards before his TD run with 3 minutes, 43 seconds left in the third quarter put the Eagles ahead 13-3.

The Bears had one last chance to win the game when they drove to the Philadelphia 17-yard line after Maurice Douglass intercepted a pass from Weldon and returned to the Chicago 40 with 3:25 to go. Furrer's fourth-down pass to the end zone was incomplete.
