THE FLAG FLAP IN THE SENATE

I THINK THAT no organization is more grieved to see the Confederate battle flag used to cloak racist or sordid causes than the good ladies of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Most descendants of Confederate veterans recognize the evil of slavery and rejoice in civil liberties for all Americans. (And yes, these liberties were slow coming and hard won by black people in the states of the old Confederacy,).

But the recent flap on the floor of the Senate over the UDC's use of the first national flag of the Confederacy was unjustified. Silliness best describes the posturing and rhetoric of some members of the Senate as they expressed their outrage over this little-recognized symbol of Southern statehood. Such passion should be directed to the real problems that face our nation today.
