PULASKI COUNTY RECEIVES GRANTS TO FIX HOMES

Pulaski County has received nearly $17,000 in grants aimed at improving living conditions for low-income residents by removing health and safety hazards in their homes and to make the houses more livable.

The larger grant - for $13,700 - came from the Virginia Housing Partnership Fund of the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development.

The county also got $3,000 from the Bosang Trust.

An average of $2,000 for each home will be spent under the Emergency Home Repair Program to fix up housing units occupied by low-income families or people meeting certain eligibility requirements.

About 14 homes will be repaired.

The county will work with New River Community Action Inc. in completing the work.

The Virginia Tech YMCA will provide some volunteer labor.

Work may include emergency plumbing, structural or electrical repairs as well as roof repair or replacement and improving accessibility to people with disabilities.

The agency has a waiting list of more than 60 families whose homes need similar repairs.
