But first things first. The RETIRED SENIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM of Montgomery County is looking for donations of apples and pint or quart canning jars, not necessarily in that order. Members are on an ambitious schedule, but hope to have everything in place by the first week in September so they can start cranking out apple butter.
You'll get a chance to sample their wares during the Wilderness Trail Festival in downtown Christiansburg, Sept. 18, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Jo Lambert at the RSVP office says their apple-butter schedule is so tight, "the jars may still be hot" when you get them.
RSVP also will sell baked goods and their "world-famous" cookbook, which contains recipes "handed down from generation to generation." The cookbooks are $7 and come highly recommended as holiday or birthday gifts.
You also can order one through the RSVP office. Call 382-5775 to reserve a copy.
If it's successful, RSVP hopes to make the apple-butter project an annual event.
If you have some canning jars you no longer need, you can take them to the RSVP office in the courthouse annex, Christiansburg, or call them at 382-5775 and arrange for pickup.
RSVP and the Christiansburg Senior Center also will sponsor an end-of-summer, covered-dish picnic for seniors, age 55 or older, Aug. 27, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at the No. 1 shelter at Bisset Park in Radford. Dessert and drinks will be furnished. Transportation is available. Call 382-5775 or 382-8173.
The registration deadline for the 1993 LEGACY QUILT SHOW in September is about two weeks off, and you do not have to be a senior to participate.
Forms are available at the Christiansburg Senior Center.
The show is restricted to quilts, quilted items, quilting supplies or merchandise related to quilting. There's a category for antique quilts. Show rules are attached to the registration form.
Completed registration forms must be returned by Aug. 27 to the Christiansburg Senior Center, P.O. Box 599, Christiansburg 24073, or to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, P.O. Box 806, Christiansburg 24073.
The show will be Sept. 11, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., at the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets. Call 382-8173 or 382-5775.
A free VISION AND GLAUCOMA SCREENING for senior citizens will be held Friday, 8-10 a.m. at the Drysdale Eye Center, 3645 S. Main St., Blacksburg (across from Montgomery Regional Hospital).
Call 951-3806 for details.
