SEPT. GUBERNATORIAL DEBATE AMONG ALLIANCE'S PLANS

The New River Valley Economic Development Alliance is planning a debate between Virginia's candidates for governor, expanded industrial appreciation activities and an economic summit in the coming months.

The debate between Republican George Allen and Democrat Mary Sue Terry is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 23, probably at Radford University. It will be televised statewide and will concentrate on economic development issues facing both the region and state.

The alliance will hold a daylong New River Valley economic summit at Radford University Sept. 23, following its annual membership meeting there that morning.

The summit will look at current economic development efforts in the region, federal actions that will have an impact on the region and state, and such topics as higher education, manufacturing, communications and transportation opportunities.

The Radford Chamber of Commerce will hold the second annual New River Ramble on the evening of Sept. 23 at the site of "The Long Way Home" outdoor drama.

The alliance will host a visit by the Economic Bridge group Sept. 24.

The program was established during the administration of Gov. Gerald Baliles to form economic bridges between Northern Virginia and Southwestern Virginia to match the manufacturing and supply resources of the two regions to benefit both.

The program is supported by Virginia Tech, George Mason University, community colleges and businesses and industries in the regions. The alliance will be involved in a tour of the New River Valley for the group, and a business matching program to link buyers from Northern Virginia organizations with suppliers in the New River Valley.

The tour will cover the region's manufacturing industries, higher education facilities, tourism attractions and other resources pertaining to economic development.

Industrial Appreciation Week activities will be held all over the valley Sept. 22 through Oct. 9.

Radford and Pulaski will offer a golf outing Sept. 22, and an Industry Showcase exhibit at the former Magic Mart at the U.S. 11-Virginia 114 intersection Sept. 23 and 24.

Montgomery County will have a golf outing, industry appreciation dinner and other events during Oct. 3-9.

The Alliance markets Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski counties and the city of Radford for new basic manufacturing and service employment opportunities.
