Additional vehicles on Virginia roads means that citizens suffer the consequences of unacceptable air quality, traffic jams, parking problems, polluted-rainwater runoff from paved parking lots and additional taxes on gas.
Alternative modes of transportation are the answer - buses, bicycles, trains and even feet. We need the services of motor lines and rail lines to bring commuters in from outlying areas. The ``smart'' road and the ``smart'' car that are being designed to monitor traffic and reroute you around congested areas are not the answer for moving transportation into the 21st century.
