SWAT SWIMMERS BRING BACK GOOD MARKS

The men's and women's swim teams from the Pulaski YMCA Southwest Aquatic Team placed high in the Long Course Nationals at Nashville, Tenn., last week.

The two teams combined to score 142 points, the 17th-highest total in the 105-team field. The men placed 14th among the men's teams with 112 points, and the women scored 30 points to finish 28th.

Brian Manning, a Dublin native who will swim at James Madison University this year, finished in the top 10 of four individual events to lead all SWAT swimmers.

Manning finished third in the 1,500 meters (16:38.74), fifth in the 400 freestyle (4:11.20), fifth in the 400 individual medley (4:51.41) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:59.53).

Pearisburg's Rickie Jennings finished 12th in the 200 backstroke (2:17.44), 18th in the 200 individual medley (2:19.67) and 19th in the 100 backstroke (1:04.08).

Whit Hughston of Blacksburg finished 15th in the 1,500 meters (17:22.20) with Hillsville's Graham Gravley just behind in 17th place (17:32.65).

The SWAT men scored in five relays. The team of Manning, Jennings, Hughston and Wytheville's Mark Stone placed eighth in the 800 freestyle relay (8:18.32), 11th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.06) and 13th in the 400 freestyle relay (3:47.92).

The team of Stone, Jennings, Manning and Scott Dunaway of Dublin placed 19th in the 200 medley relay (1:57.32). Jennings, Dunaway, Hughston and Manning finished 14th in the 400 medley (4:15.30).

Blacksburg's Sarah Clements led SWAT's women by finishing seventh in the 1,500 meters (18:27.27) and 10th in the 400 freestyle (4:41.02). Jamie Rogers of Pearisburg placed 14th in the 1,500 meters (18:49.30).

The women's relay team of Clements, Rogers, Radford's Tina Tynan and Blacksburg's Jackie McLaughlin finished 13th in the 800 freestyle relay (9:10.15) and 20th in the 400 freestyle relay (4:20.10).

Clements, McLaughlin, Marcella Broache of Christiansburg and Betsy Garratt of Radford finished 17th in the 400 medley relay (4:51.71).
