Phyllis Phillips Radford was found dead in a back bedroom of a mobile home in the Indian Valley community about 3 p.m., Floyd County authorities said.
The county Sheriff's Office went to the home on Virginia 759 after receiving a telephone call alerting them to a disturbance there.
Dr. David Oxley, deputy chief medical examiner for Western Virginia, said Radford died of a single gunshot to the chest.
Deputy Donnie Pratt said David Lewis Radford, the woman's husband, has been charged with murder.
Radford, 45, is scheduled to appear in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Wednesday to advise the court if he has an attorney. A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 15.
Radford was being held without bond Thursday in the Floyd County Jail.
