The supermarket chain issued a terse statement that said Watkins, a 15-year Food Lion employee who was in charge of special projects and development, had left to pursue other interests.
A company spokesman would not comment on whether Watkins' resignation was related to the company's recent problems, including a television show that accused Food Lion of selling out-of-date meat and other unhealthy products.
Also, Food Lion last week agreed to pay $16.2 million to settle longstanding wage and child labor law disputes with the federal government. - Associated Press
